Animal Control Receives $30,000 Grant from PetSmart Charities

Feb 13, 2020

The Cumberland County Animal Control has been awarded a $30,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to support the adoption of cats and large breed dogs. The funds will be used to pay for the spay or neuter surgery for 482 dogs and cats, allowing the shelter to reduce their adoption fee to $28 for selected animals.

The animals selected to be part of this program are traditionally harder to adopt animals, so these funds will allow the shelter to improve their adoption rate and save more animals.

“We are so excited to receive this grant so that we can really help our “harder to adopt” animals.  These are the older pets, pets with treatable health issues and our large dogs in particular,” said Elaine Smith, Animal Control Director. “With the grant subsidizing part of the adoption fee, an adopter can put those funds towards the things they need to give these pets a happy home.”

Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. The Animal Control adoption fee includes the pet’s rabies vaccination, pet privilege license, microchip and spaying or neutering by a local veterinarian.
