School Health Program
General Information:
School Health services are provided by Public Health Nurses and include vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening. The nurse also sees children by teacher referral for other health related problems. School health nurses instruct school personnel in the management of children with special health needs. Health education in the classroom is a vital function of the school nurse who works closely with the staff of the Health Education Division at the Health Department in planning and presenting special programs to children of all ages. Health counseling and home visiting are other areas of responsibility for school nurses. School-site immunization clinics are held to administer Hepatitis-B to sixth graders with parent's permission. School nurses conduct school medication audits. All nurses are registered nurses.

- 7 Year-round Schools
The Nursing Staff consists of:
- Supervisor - S.V. I
- 10 School Nurses - 9 PHN I AND 1 PHN II
Funding of Positions:
- 10 mo. Position - School Funded
- 12 Positions - Locally Funded
In addition to the above, mentioned staffing, Cumberland County School System employs twelve (12) nurses through the Exceptional Children's Program. These nurses perform skilled nursing procedures for special needs students and are supervised by Cumberland County Schools.
Private and parochial schools are served on an on-call basis as it relates to communicable disease. Cumberland County Health Department provides school-site Hepatitis-B immunization Clinics for sixth grade students each year upon school request.
