Mayors Update Coalition on Projects

Feb 19, 2020

The Cumberland County Mayors Coalition held their quarterly meeting Feb. 7 at the Hope Mills Parks and Recreation Center. The coalition consists of the mayors of the county’s nine municipalities and the chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners.

Falcon Mayor Cliff Turpin, the coalition chairman, reminded the group that the Cumberland Community Foundation has grants available to municipalities. Repairs to the Falcon Town Hall, which was damaged when a car crashed into it, are expected to be completed in April or May.

Hope Mills Mayor Jackie Warner, the coalition’s vice chair, said the town is working to develop an economic development strategy centered around opportunities and changes created by the I-295 expansion.

Godwin Mayor Willie Burnette said the town is in the final phase of a water expansion project and that a new gas station has opened.

Wade Mayor Joe Dixon and Eastover Mayor Charles McLaurin commented on the heavy traffic that will be diverted to Dunn Road, which runs through their towns, with the widening and upgrades to I-95. McLaurin also reported that Eastover is getting a new hotel at I-295 and Highway 13 and that four pickleball courts will be installed at the town park instead of tennis courts.

Linden Mayor Frances Collier said the town is working to expand parking at its park due to the success of the splash pad.

Spring Lake Mayor Larry Dobbins has invited Workforce Development to present at an upcoming Board of Alderman meeting.

Cumberland County Chairman Marshall Faircloth reported that the Board of Commissioners had set aside $10.5 million to expand water to the Gray’s Creek area and is having ongoing talks with the Cumberland County Schools about funding. A consultant hired by Spectra Venue Management is conducting a market analysis and feasibility study for a new performing arts center. The report is expected in May.

In other business, Evelyn Shaw, the chairwoman of the Public Work Commission, reported on the success of the Building Business Rally on Jan. 30; the board met Dr. Jennifer Green, Cumberland County Public Health Director; and representatives from the Cumberland County NC Works Career Center presented information on the services offered through Workforce Development.

The Mayors Coalition will meet again on May 1 at the Eastover Civic Center at 8 a.m.
