Health Department Baby Store Reopens May 21

May 09, 2019

A ribbon cutting ceremony May 17 at 10 a.m. will mark the reopening of the Cumberland County Department of Public Health’s Baby Store, which is located on the second floor of the Public Health Center at 1235 Ramsey Street. The Baby Store will open to Health Department clients May 21.

The Baby Store is an incentive-based, prenatal health promotion program that aims to create healthy moms and healthy babies. Health Department clients can earn “baby bucks” by attending their prenatal care appointments and participating in health education programs such as smoking cessation, childbirth, parenting and breastfeeding classes.

Clients with children who visit the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program; Women’s Health Clinic, Family Planning Clinic; Child Health Clinic; Immunizations Clinic as well as participants in the Care Coordination for Children; Pregnancy Care Management and newborn visit programs can also earn bucks.

Once bucks are earned, they can be used at the Baby Store to purchase items such as diapers, baby wipes, clothing and more.

Baby Store hours will be Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“The Baby Store program helps expectant moms and families by aiding in the healthy development of their babies,” said Duane Holder, Interim Health Director. “This is one way we can help decrease the infant mortality rate and low birth weight percentages in Cumberland County.”

The Baby Store is made possible through a grant awarded by the North Carolina Office of Rural Health. The Baby Store was originally opened in 2010 but closed in 2011 because funding ended. It was reopened from 2014 to 2016.

Dr. Betsey Tilson, State Health Director and the Chief Medical Officer for the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, and Dr. Connette McMahon, Cumberland County Board of Health Chair, will speak during the ceremony.
