Spring Lake Volunteer Receives Cumberland Cares Award

Feb 19, 2019

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners presented Spring Lake volunteer Terra Wright the Cumberland Cares Award at their Feb. 18 meeting. The commissioners recognized Wright for her efforts to help bring relief to Hurricane Florence victims through the volunteer group Spring Lake Strong in September.

Wright brought residents together to form Spring Lake Strong, which helped hurricane victims with immediate needs like food, water and clothing and followed up by helping clean homes and remove debris from affected neighborhoods.

Spring Lake Strong worked closely with the Cumberland Disaster Recovery Coalition to help provide information about resources available for hurricane victims. Spring Lake Strong also partnered with major nonprofits including the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest Food Bank and many churches.

“We didn’t really think at the time it [Spring Lake Strong] would be so big and that we would have so many people reach out to us to help the residents,” Wright said. “We want to help the residents outside the aspects of disaster but also with other resources and training just to make Spring Lake a better place.”

The Cumberland Cares Award was established in 2007 and recognizes a Cumberland County individual, group or agency that has made an outstanding contribution toward a better quality of life for the county’s citizens.
