Board of Elections Sends Voter Update Cards

Dec 21, 2018

The Cumberland County Board of Elections mailed biennial list maintenance notices to 13,169 registered voters in the County Dec. 17. The purpose of the notice is to ensure that voter information is current. The notices were sent to registered voters in Cumberland County who have not had contact with the Board of Elections for a period of two federal election cycles.

The biennial list maintenance notice includes a forwardable address confirmation mailing. Voters who receive the notice are encouraged to fill out the card and drop the card in the mail. Voters have 30 days to respond. If the voter does not return the confirmation mailing within 30 days of the mailing, or the mailing is returned by the postal service as undeliverable, then the voter’s record will be marked inactive in the voter registration database.

Inactive voters are still registered voters with the Board of Elections. But an inactive voter will be asked to update his or her address the next time they show up to vote in an election. The biennial list maintenance process is mandated by federal and state law.

“We encourage voters that receive the biennial list maintenance notice from our office to please respond,” said Board of Elections Director Terri Robertson. “Postage is paid so the costs to the voter is just their time.”

Registered voters may also fill out a notice in person at the Board of Elections office, located in the E. Newton Smith Center, 227 Fountainhead Lane, Fayetteville. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. As a reminder, the Board of Elections office and all Cumberland County Government offices will be closed Dec. 24 – 26 for the Christmas holiday and Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day.
