Animal Shelter ‘Friends’ Group Obtains Non-Profit Status, Media Invited to Animal Shelter Thanksgiving

Nov 19, 2018

The Friends of Cumberland County Animal Shelter received a 501(c)(3) non-profit designation Sept. 6.

The designation allows the group to seek donations through a direct link on their Facebook page and to qualify for grants and nonprofit programs that benefit the animals at the Cumberland County shelter and other animals in the county, said Shelly Bryant, FOCCAS president.

The group works in conjunction with the Cumberland County Animal Shelter to promote animal welfare initiatives and responsible pet ownership through education, community outreach, and animal enrichment programs at the facility located at 4704 Corporation Drive.

“The Friends of Cumberland County Animal Shelter organization is vital to our shelter and the community because they help us provide our shelter animals with enrichment and extended medical care and assist pet owners in need,” said Animal Control Director Elaine Smith.

“We have limitations to our budget and resources, so FOCCAS is able to help fill in the gaps with things like extra toys, treats, community assistance and education programs. These things make a world of difference to some of our animals and our whole community.”

For its first community outreach initiative, FOCCAS is collecting dog houses, straw, blankets and food for outdoor dogs to be comfortable and safe over the winter months. Owners and animals will be nominated by Animal Control Staff. Residents who would like to donate may drop off items at the shelter or make monetary gifts through the FOCCAS Facebook page.

Additionally, FOCCAS has organized a Thanksgiving meal for the shelter animals on Tuesday, Nov. 20 starting at 11:30 a.m. Approximately 100 dogs and 50 cats will enjoy this animal-friendly meal. Media who would like to attend the event should contact Geneve Mankel at 910-321-7108 or

If you would like to donate food items for the dinner, they can be dropped off at the shelter today until 5:30 p.m. Items needed include

Boneless turkey breast or boneless chicken breast (Please no whole or frozen Turkeys)

Canned Tuna

Canned Sardines
