Soil and Water Conservation District Awards Sponsorships

Aug 07, 2018

Two local high school students represented Cumberland County at the 2018 Resource Conservation Workshop in June. The Cumberland Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored the students based on their interest in pursuing a career in conservation of natural resources.

Steven Hogan is a rising senior at Grays Creek High School. He is the son of Paul and Michelle Hogan of Hope Mills.

Noah Lucas is a rising sophomore at Cape Fear High School. He is the son of Chip and Karen Lucas of Falcon.

Hogan and Lucas each received a $600 sponsorship that paid for registration, lodging, food and travel expenses to attend the Resource Conservation Workshop at N.C. State University in Raleigh June 24 through June 29. The week-long workshop brought high school students from across the state together to learn about environmental conservation as well as careers in environmental science and natural resources management. The workshop provided hands-on participation in conservation topics, which included visits to a water treatment plant, an educational forest, university conservation projects and meetings with representatives from natural resource management agencies.
