Health Department Reminds Citizens of Egg Recall

FAYETTEVILLEThe Cumberland County Department of Public Health reminds residents of a recall of eggs distributed to North Carolina grocery stores because of the potential of Salmonella contamination. Residents are advised to follow guidelines issued in the Food and Drug Administration recall notice. The notice is available online at https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm604640.htm.

 

Rose Acre Farms voluntarily recalled 206,749,248 eggs because the eggs have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella Braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances infection with Salmonella Braenderup can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

 

The eggs were distributed from a farm in Hyde County, N.C., and reached consumers in nine states including North Carolina through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery. The FDA reports 22 illnesses have been reported.

 

The affected eggs, from plant number P-1065 with the date range of 011 through date 102 printed on either the side portion or the principal side of the carton or package as follows: Lot Codes 011 – 102. Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are urged to immediately discontinue use of the recalled eggs and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (855) 215-5730 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
