NC Works Career Center Helps Homeless Women Veterans

Mar 23, 2018

Cumberland County NC Works held a Homeless Stand Down event March 14 for homeless female veterans at the Career Center, located at 414 Ray Ave. Eighteen women attended the event, which brought together representatives of services and agencies to help the women obtain hot meals, clothing and assistance with finding jobs and housing.

The stand down was timed so NC Works Career Staff could help the women prepare for the March to Work Job Fair and Fort Bragg Job Fair, both held March 21. NC Works Career Staff helped the women with job applications, writing resumes and practicing for job interviews.

“We held this event to take care of the homeless female veterans,” said Veteran Career Advisor Jacqueline Yi. “They are a special population and we try to meet their needs by introducing them to different service providers in the community they may not be aware of.”

NC Works Career Center staff who work in the Veteran Services section conducted outreach to identify homeless, female veterans and invite them to the stand down. Yi said some of the women attended the job fairs and have since interviewed for jobs or have been offered jobs.

Service providers who attended the stand down included Cumberland County Veterans Services, Veterans Affairs, Cohen Medical Services, VA Vocational Rehab of Winston-Salem, Fayetteville Technical Community College, American Legion Post 202, Fayetteville State University Financial Services, Service Source, Kelly Services and Labor Finders.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program and Family Endeavors provided referrals and information to help the women find housing.

Grandson’s, McDonald’s, Starbucks and Brooklyn Pizza provided food at the event.

Cumberland County’s NC Works Career Center is the only one in the state that holds homeless stand down events for women veterans. A separate event for male veterans is held in the fall.
